About Peter

Professor Peter Gates OAM, MMBS, FRACP, FAAN

Peter is a Professor of Neurology at Deakin University, Geelong, Australia.

He began practicing medicine in January of 1976 as an intern at the Geelong Hospital. He then became a resident medical officer at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne from 1977 to 1979, and then a neurology registrar at Prince Henry’s Hospital from 1980 to 1981.

In 1982 Peter moved to the UK with his son and wife to work at the Newcastle General Hospital with the late Sir (subsequently Lord) John Walton for two years. In 1983 he then moved to Canada to become the Clinical Research Fellow at the University Hospital in London, Ontario for one years with the late Professor HJM (Barney) Barnett on the ECIC Bypass study.

In 1986 Peter became the first Neurologist to move out of Melbourne and set up a regional centre of Neurology for Victoria in Geelong. It was here that Peter set out to pursue a career in clinical neurology, clinical research, and teaching.

The content and videos on this website is the culmination of over 40 years of clinical practice and teaching. Peter has strived to pass on his understanding and knowledge of neurology to make this complicated subject simpler and easier to understand.

Peter has worked to ensure that the content and videos on this website are designed to assist any practitioner who treats patients with neurological problems ranging from students, GPs, allied health workers, and physicians. His textbook Clinical Neurology a Primer (publisher Elsevier) has received rave reviews and is recommended reading for all trainees of neurology in Australia.

Seeing the sudden look of understanding in the face of his students is one of the most rewarding experiences of Peter’s career thus far. The opportunity to teach those willing to learn is a great privilege and Peter thoroughly enjoys engaging with the bright doctors of tomorrow.

In 2021 He was awarded an OAM for services to neurology
